Fire Extinguishers: Know Your A-B-Cs

Identifying which type of materials are most likely to combust in your home or business is good way to determine what type of fire extinguisher you need. The following list will help you choose which class (or classes) of fire extinguisher will be useful in extinguishing various types of fires.

  • Class A— Class A fire extinguishers can be used on wood, paper, trash, cloth and other everyday materials.
  • Class B— Class B fire extinguishers can extinguish flammable liquids, including petroleum, propane, paint and oil.
  • Class C— Class C fire extinguishers can be used to extinguish fires that involve electrical equipment that is still plugged in without posing an electrocution risk to the operator.
  • Class D— Class D fire extinguishers are useful in putting out fires from combustible metals and alloys, such as magnesium, titanium and lithium.
  • Class K/Class F— Class K (or Class F) fire extinguishers should be kept in every kitchen, whether residential or commercial. These types of fire extinguishers can extinguish fires resulting from cooking oils, greases and fats.
  • Purple-K (PKP)— As an extension of Class B fire extinguishers, Purple-K is a dry, powdery formula used to put out chemical fires at airports, oil refineries, power plants and petrol stations.
